How To Swap Cheap Dopamine Hits for Real Progress

Mornings in the Lab Community Corner | Dan Zakaria

Most people think winning the morning is about willpower. They think it’s about motivation.

But Dan Zakaria has another take.

Our phones have us on leashes. Scrolling Instagram, late-night YouTube… We get dopamine hits all day. And when it’s time to wake up early, or push our goals, our brains want one thing:

Another hit.

Instead of fighting this nature, Dan rewired it.

He replaced “junk dopamine” with “progress dopamine.”

Instead of chasing notifications, he started chasing habits:

  • Winning his morning routine

  • Learning from podcasts

  • Journaling at night

Now his brain doesn’t crave distractions anymore.

It craves momentum because he trained himself to want consistent progress.
